First Printed Program of Courses at the Polytechnical College

Programm der Großherzoglich Badischen Polytechnischen Schule Karlsruhe für das Jahr 1832-33. (Karlsruhe 1832), ca. 19.5 × 24.8 cm, 34 pages. KIT Library Archives IV, 01.

The first program of Karlsruhe Polytechnical College to appear in print was for the 1832/33 school year. Like a university course catalog, it provided information about the teaching staff, available courses, and admission requirements. This publication coincided with a significant restructuring of the college by State Councilor Carl Friedrich Nebenius (1784–1857). The Building School, previously headed by Friedrich Weinbrenner (1766–1826), was incorporated into the Polytechnical College as a separate technical school, along with the Engineering School founded by Johann Gottfried Tulla (1770–1827). The Forestry School from Heidelberg was also added. Other technical branches established at the Polytechnical College included the Higher Vocational School and the Commercial School. This reform led to the creation of distinct courses of study. The printed program presents the subjects taught at Karlsruhe Polytechnical College within a systematic structure and the courses of study derived from them. It also lists collections, libraries, and other facilities available for study and teaching. The standard age of admission for pupils was set at 15. An attached program for an affiliated preparatory school reveals that previous schooling did not sufficiently meet the educational equirements expected by the Polytechnical College. kn
